Dr. Roby C. Thompson
In this episode, we’re focusing on the impact on care of OREF-funded research by Dr. Roby Thompson on cartilage degeneration.
Between 1974 and 1995, Dr. Thompson was professor and chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where his experience as a clinician and scientist attracted more academic research leaders to join the department.
In the 1970s, Dr. Thompson received two OREF grants to research whether proteoglycan synthesis increases in osteoarthritic cartilage. His research sought a better understanding of how proteoglycan matrix is depleted, which would help to define the early pathways of osteoarthritic destruction of the joint.
Watch as Dr. Thompson discusses his body of work, how it has impacted clinical practice and, most importantly, how it has improved patient outcomes.
