Dr. Joseph A. Buckwalter IV
In this episode, we’re focusing on the impact on care of OREF-funded research by Dr. Joseph Buckwalter on cartilage degeneration.
Dr. Buckwalter is the Arthur Steindler Chair of Orthopedics, orthopedic surgeon and professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He specializes in musculoskeletal oncology, reconstructive surgery, and trauma and has research interests in articular cartilage biology, especially the causes and prevention of the development of osteoarthritis after injury.
In 1979 Dr. Buckwalter received an OREF Resident Grant to research the structure of hyaline cartilage proteoglycan aggregate and investigate structural changes that may occur with aging. He received an OREF Research Grant in 1982 to investigate ways to enhance collagen synthesis following a ligament tear to shorten the period of disuse during rehabilitation after injury.
